Over the years, various scientific studies have discovered all the different things beer is good for. And as it turns out, beer is good for a lot of things. And so, because we’re so kind, here are ten studies you can quote next time you’re told by your nagging significant other, “Stop drinking beer, it’ll ruin your health.”
– Beer makes you live longer – Virginia Tech researchers found that people who drink moderate amounts of beer were 19% less likely to die within a given time period than people who don’t drink a drip.
– Drinking beer will help you lose weight – Drinking high-powered beer like Leffe will help you get drunk and thinner. A new book called The Diet Myth by Professor Tim Spector says that everything we know about losing weight is wrong and strong Belgian beer is good for the bacteria in your gut, which will help aid efficient digestion and therefore how many nutrients your body needs to what it leaves to waste.
– Beer helps beat cancer – Xanthohumol is a flavonoid found in hops, which is found in beer, and is an anti-oxidant that stops cancer-causing enzymes from doing anything.
– Beer keeps your mind ticking over – A study in the New England Journal of Medicine found women who had one drink a day were less likely to have mental issues as they grow older.
– Beer doesn’t give you a beer belly – A study at University College London found the ‘beer belly’ is a myth. The researchers wrote that though people think people who drink beer are more obese, there is actually no association between the sweet nectar and obesity.
– Beer stops kidney stones – If you’ve ever had a kidney stone, you’ll know how important this one is. Drinking moderate amounts of beer will reduce your chances of getting kidney stones according to a study in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.
– Beer has less calories than milk or orange juice – It doesn’t matter that you’re probably not going to drink ten pints of skimmed milk or OJ. If you were going to trust any alcohol maker, it’d be Guinness and they released statistics that their drink is lower in calories than other supposedly healthier drinks.
– Hops protects against Alzheimer’s – Beer won’t protect you from not being able to remember what happened last night but Xanthohumol (which we mentioned earlier) is able to protect the brain from degenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
– Beer has loads of vitamins – Why go through the hell of necking one of those fruit smoothies when a beer will do the same damn job? Dr Stephan Domenig is the medical director of Mayr Health Centre in Austria and he says there are loads of super-nutrients in beer.
– Beer makes your bones stronger – A glass or two of beer will make your bones stronger because it is rich in dietary silicon which is key to building bone mineral density, according to a study in the Journal of Science of Food and Agriculture.
