Ancient flood myths may have a basis in geological history

10,000 years ago, at a time when humans recorded historical events by telling mythical stories that got passed from one generation to the next, huge parts of the North American continent were deluged by massive walls of water. They were, as geologist David R. Montgomery writes in this month’s Discover magazine, “Biblical-type floods.” Huge regions of the Pacific Northwest, called the “scablands” were chewed up by flash floods that were more like tsunamis. And it was all caused by the melting of the glaciers from the last ice age. As the walls of ice damming lakes melted away, the waters would rush out across the land.

Here’s a map of the ice age floods (the gray regions are flood areas) — click to enlarge.

Though it took nearly a century for geologists to recognize the deep scores in the earth, displaced boulders, and deep ripple marks on the prairies as signs of what is today called the Missoula Flood, apparently many tribes local to the Pacific Northwest had very similar stories about floods. Writes Montgomery:

There is now compelling evidence for many gigantic ancient floods where glacial ice dams failed time and again: At the end of the last glaciation, some 10,000 years ago, giant ice-dammed lakes in Eurasia and North America repeatedly produced huge floods. In Siberia, rivers spilled over drainage divides and changed their courses. England’s fate as an island was sealed by erosion from glacial floods that carved the English Channel. These were not global deluges as described in the Genesis story of Noah, but were more focused catastrophic floods taking place throughout the world. They likely inspired stories like Noah’s in many cultures, passed down through generations.

Since devastating floods were a fact of life on the margins of the world’s great ice sheets, people in those areas probably witnessed them. Early missionaries in eastern Washington reported stories of a great flood among Yakima and Spokane tribes, who could identify locations where survivors sought refuge. An Ojibwa Indian legend from around Lake Superior tells of a great snow that fell one September at the beginning of time: A bag contained the sun’s heat until a mouse nibbled a hole in it. The warmth spilled over, melting the snow and producing a flood that rose above the tops of the highest pines. Everyone drowned except for an old man who drifted about in his canoe rescuing animals. The native inhabitants of the Willamette Valley told stories of a time the valley filled with water, forcing everyone to flee up a mountain before the waters receded. One Response to Ancient flood myths may have a basis in geological history

  1. Geza Zake says:

Having completed the construction of Noah ark God said:

“I will send rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights, and I will blot out from the face of the earth every living thing that I have made.”
Large rain is falling forty days and water rose high above the earth. Thus all creatures died that moved upon the earth, birds, cattle, beasts, all swarming and all people. Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark.
After the water receded, God said to Noah, “Come out of the ark with yours family and perform all living beings, every creature that is with you: birds and cattle and every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth, and let the earth teeming, fruitful, and multiply upon the earth!”

Once out of the ark God blessed Noah and said, “Be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth. Let fear and you fear all the animals of the earth and all the birds of the air, upon all that upon the earth, and all the fish in the sea: the your hand are they delivered. Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God He made man!

So, apart from the original Biblical story of the creation of Eve and Adam to Abraham about the origin of life on Earth, and we have another story that starts with Noah and his family. We have two time lag. The first is that of the Paradise and the expulsion of Adam and Eve in the world to multiply and create the world. In that time, God already has problems with riotous living man, who at the beginning of punishing him only with partial destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. Because the man after that punishment has not improved God decides to punish all people and all life forms on earth with a flood.

While the first one to create complex, creating the first man Adam, Eve and then a woman in the second case, the creation of Noah is still simple and clear, just like what happens in nature. All life on Earth is reduced to a flood of biological unit polar pairs of people, animals and plants from which one can always develop new lush life multiply. Although in the first case the presence of biologically polar pair of Adam and Eve, this is the second case of a pair of polar biological mode of creating a striking variety on Earth. Moreover, it is interesting that in both cases God gives man his own master features of the Earth and everything on Earth, with the recognition that in both cases made the mistake that created bad and corrupt people. It tells us that God did not create only infallible humans on Earth, even more, unrepentant and devises a way to repair, in both cases of partial or total destruction of life on Earth, and the unit pairs per species.

Even today, many believe that this story of a great flood and Noah’s Ark tale – a story for young children. Some try to find arguments for the truth of these stories in geological and hydrological phenomena in the past. It is particularly well known flood after the breakdown of ocean water through Gibraltar into the Mediterranean basin.

However, we still have flooding after heavy rains and floods that occur after the tsunami for earthquakes in the sea, as it was recently in Indonesia that killed over 200.000 people. In Japan, the tsunami caused a wave height of 23 meters, was flooded about 400 square kilometers and killed more than 30.000 people. Are not these all appear similar to the biblical Great Flood. Massive flooding in Thailand after heavy rains journalists call “Biblical floods in Bangkok ” .

In addition to the Biblical story of the great flood have very similar description of the flood in the Epic of Gilgamesh. These and other stories point to records in the flood and the flood at the early age of humanity, as we see them today, with difference, that such cataclysmic phenomena always in some way associated with the will and power of God.

However, today we have a new and totally different situation, because there was the power of man to control earthquakes and climate on Earth called HAARP and we have something very similar to what God commanded Noah, and it is a scientific collecting and storing seeds of plants and flora and the genome of fauna, with the same purpose, to preserve life on Earth in its most elementary level.

Whatever be the story of Noah and the great flood in the fact that the decision of God
whole life on Earth is reduced to the unit being female – male pairs per species and then one of the pair, one unit being re-establish what we call a multitude of species, flock, herd or group, for example humans or wolves, so too will the Bible stories that after thousands of years, scientists are doing the same. In their labs along and saved the seeds and genome species of animals and plants, therefore, are doing the same as Noah worked only on the macro level of life of the world. In one case, the seeds of plants, and the second case, the genomes of species. Seeds from each and every genome may be renewed unit life, life of the unit types, a flock, herd or group. Therefore, scientists are now doing the same thing he was doing, Noah. Today, scientists in England are collected genomes of living beings of fauna, and in Santk Petersburg Russians gather the seeds of plants of the world. In both cases at these levels are small volumes of life. All life can be placed in a research room, which is a symbol of Arka. It is also the link between the stories of the Bible with the present.

These are the “packages” of micro life on Earth, which in the future may be “package” for the transmission of life from Earth to other suitable planets, or for the renewal of new life on Earth in the case of some major catastrophe, or even after a possible nuclear war or HARRP war.

So, the story of Noah and the great flood occurred before or perhaps more than 10,000 years ago, and is now current. The man already has such powers that can manipulated global climate, cause earthquakes and volcanic activity with cataclysmic regional and global consequences.

With all of this that is written must be borne in mind that the Noah’s Ark is symbol, or a metaphor for the reduction of living beings on the unit being from whom we can develop a new kind of life. As stated from each seed can develop new being flora, we all know it, but today we know that the preservation of the DNA molecule can develop new being. Hence, figuratively speaking, by Noah’s Ark had anticipated what makes science today. The scientific community today can think of the ark (Noah’s Ark) sized transport containers and to put it anywhere as a starting point of a new life. It is a biblical scientific message for today,
