Can smells travel through a liquid?

Yes they can, they can also travel through solids as you might have noticed with some plastic packaging. Smells move around by the movement of what’s called aroma molecules and there are two main differences between the movement of these molecules in air and their movement in liquids or solids. The differences are the concentration of the molecules and the speed at which they travel through a medium. For example – in water, the concentration may be very low as many aroma molecules are not very soluble in water. The speed of diffusion of the aroma molecules is also much slower than in air because there are lots more solvent or solid molecules in the way.
